Message from Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park (Georgia)
The recent armed conflict between Russia and Georgia caused damage to the
Borjomi Gorge. Forest fires started simultaneously on August15, in the
region of Borjomi. The most damaged forest areas are located between
villages of Tsagveri and Daba, famous summer resorts bordering the Nedzvi
Sanctuary. The 150 ha of a buffer zone of the Borjomi Kharagauli National
Park was burnt. The damage to the actual park is only 10 ha, although the
burnt buffer zone is an indirect threat to the park representing...

WWF Major Donor Trip to Central Balkan National Park, Bulgaria
WWF Netherlands organised a major donor trip to Central Balkan National
Park in Bulgaria in autumn this year - one of 11 existing PAN Parks
scattered throughout the Europe. The trip was an opportunity for group of
major donors of WWF NL experience some of the benefits that PAN Parks and
WWF had brought to the area through they support to create a network of the
well-managed wilderness protected areas in Europe - PAN Parks.

Letter to Russian Minister of Natural Resources
PAN Parks Foundation regrets to hear about the conflict in Georgia. Our
organisation is very much concerned about the situation, because one of our
member parks, Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, is located in Georgia.

European Wilderness Trip - top decision makers go wild

Peneda-Gerês National Park receives PAN Parks certification: European
network of best wilderness areas is still growing
The PAN Parks Foundation welcomes the eleventh European national park to
its wilderness network ? the Peneda-Gerês National Park in Portugal.
Official ceremony to award the certificate was organised at European
Wilderness Trip, hosted by Majella National Park, June 26-27.

Dear Colleagues,
With this letter I would like to inform you about the results of a
10-month period while we were celebrating the 10-years anniversary of the
establishment of PAN Parks Foundation. Let me list a few remarkable
achievements of the period between September 2007 and June 2008:

Are you Kidding!! The PAN Parks Family grows!
The Bezoar goat project in Borjomi Kharagauli National Park celebrates the
birth of 3 new kids and are expecting another one very soon. This is really
good news and a success for this important conservation project in the
first PAN Park in the Caucasus.
WWF Caucasus started the first phase (Reintroduction of Bezoar Goat to
Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park) of the more far-reaching project, -

PAN Parks and the CBD Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA)
At the moment the COP meeting is taking place in Germany for the
Convention on Biodiversity. The CBD Programme of Work on Protected Areas
(PoWPA) focuses solely on the in situ conservation of biodiversity and set
tangible targets. The aim of these targets is to deliver a global network
of comprehensive, well-managed, and representative terrestrial and marine
protected areas with a deadline of 2010 and 2012. PAN Parks has an

New local partners in Borjomi- Kharagauli
The first three local partners have been awarded PAN Parks certification
in Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park. The ceremony took place in Borjomi, at
the headquarters of the National Park, on the 18th of March 2008.
All the new partners have achieved high standards in quality, and have
successfully met the strict criteria outlined in the Park?s Sustainable
Tourism Development Strategy (STDS).

Fulufjallet flies high
KLM has just put part of its new fleet of Boeing 777-300 into service. As
part of the celebration of its partnership with WWF it has chosen to name
the planes after some of the world?s leading National Parks. Certified
PAN Park Fulufjallet in Sweden was chosen as a European park as a result of
negotiations between KLM, WWF and the PAN Parks Foundation.

The World's oldest tree discovered close to Fulufjallet
Scientists have found a cluster of spruces in the mountains in western
Sweden which, at an age of 8,000 years, may be the world's oldest living
trees. The old tree is found in a nature reserve close to Fulufjället.
The tree is growing in Drevfjället nature reserve close to the Norwegian
border about 25 km from Fulufjället National Park.

New Local Partners in Retezat receive certification
An award ceremony has taken place to award certified local partner status
to the first eight members of the Retezat Local PAN Park group.
Certification has taken place following the development of the Sustainable
Tourism Development Strategy. The standards used for assessing the
eco-certified status of the businesses were those developed by the
Association for Ecotourism in Romania. These have been created specifically

PAN Parks in the Travel Show Spotlight
This month saw the promotion of the PAN Parks Network to both consumers and
tour operators in the UK and the Netherlands. The Marketing and
Communications team were in attendance at the Destinations Travel Show in
London and Fiets en Wandelbeurs in Amsterdam. PAN Parks had a very visible
presence with big visual displays that drew high numbers of visitors.

really good example of how the partnership between the parks and busineess
can result in mutual benefits is the support that the Retezat Tourism
Association has recieved from visitors travelling with Exodus Travel to
Oulanka National Park.

Green Business Opportunities ? Business & Biodiversity conference in
Ljubljana
In 2006, the European Commission launched a biodiversity communication,
which included a commitment to engage the private sector in partnerships
for biodiversity.
