Russia's Cultural Treasure - The "Venice of the North"
St.Petersburg, with its outstanding layout, architecture and cultural heritage, has become one of the most frequently visited destinations in Russia. Founded in 1703, this former capital, built on one hundred islands, is sometimes called "The Venice of the North" and the city's numerous canals and the mighty Neva river still retain its romantic character. There are hundreds of bridges here, and one of local favorite attractions is to see the eight bridges spanning the Neva drawn and lowered at night to allow shipping to pass up and down the river.
