Meeting 2007

Food Identity and Intellectual Property Rights

Viana do Castelo, Portugal, 4 September 2007

Index

Introduction

The next Gastronomy & Tourism Research Group Expert Meeting will take place in Viana do Castelo on Tuesday, September 4th 2007. This immediately precedes the main ATLAS Annual Conference.

The theme for the meeting is 'Food Identity and Intellectual Property Rights'.

The environment in which tourism destinations compete is increasingly competitive. Anything a destination has to offer can be utilised to motivate tourists and draw them to that specific destination. Common promotional tools are both the culture and heritage of an area. As gastronomy is inorexably linked to both culture and heritage, it is a natural progression to seek to develop a food identity for a destination.

'If gastronomy can be linked to specific countries or regions, it becomes a powerful marketing tool' (Richards, 2001).

If ownership is possible, the owner has a unique selling preposition which delivers marketing advantage. Can you only go to one specific destination or region to experience a particular commodity in its natural environment? The economic benefit of achieving such ownership may be considerable.

As well as economic advantages, there are additional issues in terms of culture and globalisation. If a product or process isn't protected, will it become diluted and diminish over time? Will it survive at all? Or will it thrive and prosper in new environments?

Keynote speakers

Dr Franscisco Sampaio, Chairman of Alto Minho's Brotherhood of Gastronomes

The theme of his speech will concern Food Identity and Intellectual Property Rights in relation to Northern Portugal.
