DIT Conference: European Tourism and the Environment

Promotion and Protection, Achieving the Balance

11th & 12th October 2007

Dublin

The European Tourism and the Environment, Promotion and Protection – Achieving the Balance Conference is being held following the completion of a 2 year research project investigating Sustainable Tourism Development: toward the mitigation of tourism destination impacts. This project was 100% funded by the Environmental Protection Agency in Ireland and was one of the first tourism projects to be supported by the agency. International academics, expert practitioners and industry stakeholders are invited and conference attendance is estimated to be in the region of 150 delegates.  In order to facilitate attendance, delegates will not be charged an attendance fee.

The aims of the two day conference include dissemination of the DIT research project, as well as providing an opportunity for all attendees to network, share best practise, learn from each other and promote their own work through a series of papers and case studies which will be presented over the two days. International guest speakers, considered experts in the field of sustainable tourism, have been invited to speak at the conference. Exhibition space will be available.

The conference invites abstracts and papers to be submitted on a wide range of topics including:

§        Sustainable tourism development

§        Responsible promotion of tourism

§        Environmental tourism

§        Eco tourism

§        Impacts of tourism on the environment

§        Sustainable hospitality management

§        Tourism economics

§        Perceptions of tourism

§        Geo-Tourism

These abstracts will be reviewed by an international review panel.

The conference will raise the profile of sustainable tourism within Ireland by introducing delegates to both Irish and international experts within the area.  The conference is endorsed as part of Ireland's contribution to the UN Year of Planet Earth
