Conference 'Call for Papers' for
‘Dimensions of Pilgrimage: Journey, Meaning and Place’
Canterbury Christ Church University,
13-14 September 2008

Members of staff from Canterbury Christ Church University are currently planning to hold an inter-disciplinary conference at the University on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September 2008 on the subject ‘Dimensions of Pilgrimage: Journey, Meaning and Place’.
Alongside the conference we are planning a six week exhibition of sculpture to be held at the University’s Sidney Cooper Gallery in Canterbury on the theme of “Journeys”. This will coincide with the 2008 Canterbury International Festival. Several speakers and sculptors have already agreed to offer papers or include selected works. Delegates from the conference will be invited to a Private View of the launch of the “Journeys” exhibition on Saturday 13th September 2008.

We are now issuing a call for papers for the conference on one or more of the following themes:
  • contemporary notions of pilgrimage;
  • spiritual and interior pilgrimage;
  • pilgrimage, places and spectacle;
  • different dimensions of pilgrimage:
    • including, for example,
    • historical,
    • theological,
    • artistic and multi-faith;
  • pilgrimage and the arts;
  • meanings and journeys in contemporary cultures;
  • the meaning and functions of pilgrimage;
  • physical interactions with place, architecture and art;
  • neo-Romantic concepts of pilgrimage;
  • contemporary perceptions/interpretations of Chaucer.
At this stage we would also be pleased to receive proposals for papers on other topics related to the overall themes of the conference.

The papers we are now calling for should be a maximum of 30 minutes long.

Suggestions for papers, including a synopsis (c. 300 words), should be sent for consideration by the conference steering committee by 1 March 2008 to
Dr Paul Dalton,
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Dean of Arts and Humanities),
Canterbury Christ Church University,
North Holmes Road,
Canterbury, CT1 1QU

Although we are hoping to try to secure some funds to help support the conference, this may be unsuccessful. We would ask, therefore, that contributors anticipate meeting their own travel, accommodation and subsistence costs (though they will be exempt from any conference registration fee).
