TOURISM AND THE THIRD SECTOR:  RELEASING THE POTENTIAL

Neuchatel, Switzerland, 18.-20.09.2009

Conference Theme:

Tourism and the Third Sector is the theme of ETFs inaugural conference, which will be held in the beautiful lakeside city of Neuchatel, Switzerland in September 2009. This conference will bring together representatives from a diverse range of organizations including those in the tourism sector, third sector, public authorities, policy makers, industry and community representatives, tourism researchers and others who recognize the potential for positive outcomes of Tourism Sector Third Sector interaction.

Conference Aim:

The aim of this conference is to bring together representatives from a diverse range of organizations including those in the third sector, public authorities, policy makers, industry and community representatives, tourism researchers and others who recognize the potential for positive outcomes of Tourism Sector Third Sector interaction. The third sector comprises value driven non-governmental organisations which principally reinvest their surpluses to further social, environmental or cultural objectives.

The idea behind this conference is to provide an intellectual space to explore the enormous potential that exists between the Tourism Sector and the Third Sector. The conference streams provide a coherent logic to the proceedings yet are diverse enough to allow for the articulation of a wide range of multidisciplinary perspectives which it is hoped will result in lively debate and provide new insights into the interrelationship between Tourism and the Third Sector.

Conference Streams:

Abstracts for presentation are invited on any of the following six broad themes:
  • Tourism and the Third Sector: Governance, Participation and Exclusion
  • Tourism and the Third Sector: Conservation, Sustainability and Partnership
  • Tourism and the Third Sector: Culture and Representation
  • Tourism and the Third Sector: Delivering the Visitor Experience
  • Tourism and the Third Sector: Social Entrepreneurship
  • Tourism and the Third Sector: Education and Training


Submission of Abstracts and Papers:

Abstracts of up to 350 words corresponding to one of the conference streams should be submitted for blind review by Monday 15th of December 2008. Successful authors will be notified by the end of February, 2009. The official language of the conference is English.

A final paper of between 4,000 8,000 words is required by the end of May 2009 if authors wish to be included in the proceedings.

Special Session on Research Practice
In addition to panel paper presentations we will hold a special session on "Research Practice" This session is particularly focused on building research agendas and collaboration across the Tourism and Third Sectors. This special session will comprise a series of brief proposals outlining potential research agendas and or collaboration projects across the sectors.


Roundtables & Workshops
In addition to the panel sessions outlined above we welcome proposals for roundtable discussions and workshops which closely align with the conference theme(s). If you would like to organise a themed roundtable session or workshop please contact us before December 2008.

Conference Publications:
All accepted papers will be published in the proceedings. It is envisaged that selected papers will be published in the form an edited volume under the conference title.

Other Outcomes:
It is our hope that this conference will act as a catalyst for further initiatives in relation to Tourism and the Third Sector and that such outcomes will have positive practical implications for a wide variety of communities, organisations, their clients and others.
