2nd Indian Hospitality Congress

National Conference

On

“Hospitality Management Education – Issues & Challenges”

29./30.01.2009

Organised by

Durgapur Society of Management Science, Durgapur West Bengal

&

Centre for Mountain Tourism & Hospitality Studies,

Srinagar Garhwal, Uttarakhand

Background:

The field of Hospitality Management Education is unique, rather a close knit area. Though maturing there are more than 350 colleges offering hotel management in India, majority of them focusing on Undergraduate studies. With about 21 Universities offering Hotel Management in their own campuses or via distance education are directly involved in imparting hospitality education. The consciousness level towards the sound education system in the hospitality sector in India & abroad has been increasing with each passing day. Although it occupies its own niche, Hospitality Management Education, is in fact, one larger segment of hospitality industry. It could be argued that formal preparation for industry professionals, via hospitality education programmes, is the single most important segment, as it attracts & draws a large number of people to give a pathway to hospitality as career and is generally committed to professionalizing industry in terms of providing young & energetic human resources. A common misconception that a formal education programmes exist to serve the industry – may not be possible as they are already an integral part of larger industry. Indeed up to an extent educational programmes serve the purpose of providing competent manpower to industry yet the purpose of providing education is varied & multifold. Carl Riegel (1995) has defined hospitality education “as field of multidisciplinary study which brings the perspectives of many disciplines, especially those found in social sciences, to bear on particular areas of application & practice in the hospitality & tourism Industry.”

There have been various debates in terms of what should be imparted in terms of hospitality education. The survey has been conducted by FHRAI on status of Hospitality Education in India. Ministry of Tourism Govt. of India has approached UNWTO for development of Hospitality Curriculum. Various experts have been interviewed in magazines like Hospitality Biz India, Express Hospitality weekly & others to seek their opinion about improving the standards of Hospitality Education in India.

Academic Institutions have their own views where as industry offers certain requisites. In totality there is a strong urge for a conclave to deliberate, discuss & come forward with recommendations on hospitality management education. On one hand few institutes are exporting Indian Hospitality Education overseas while others are lacking even at regional level. This two day conference is aimed to bring all these issues under one roof so as to come forward with scholarly thoughts & industry view points collectively for the hospitality education development.
