Bogota, Colombia, 3 - 4 December 2008
For the 6th consecutive year, the Affiliate Members Secretariat of the
UNWTO, in conjunction with the Colombian Hotel Association (COTELCO),
and on this occasion with the support of the UNWTO Sustainable
Development Department have organized an international seminar which
this year is dedicated to: “CLIMATE CHANGE: SOLUTIONS FOR THE TOURISM INDUSTRY”
As early as 2003, the World Tourism Organization, aware of the
interaction between tourism and climate change, organized the Djerba
Conference which was followed by the International Conference on
Climate Change and Tourism in Davos and the Ministerial Summit of
London in 2007, and the Conference on Climate Solutions for the Tourism
Industry in Sharm el-Sheikh in November 2008.
The UNWTO has likewise been working together with the United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP) and with the World Meteorological
Organization (WMO) on various initiatives and studies on climate change
and tourism.
Convinced of the need to place this issue among the priorities of the
UNWTO’s agenda, the theme of this year’s World Tourism Day is “Tourism
Meeting the Challenge of Climate Change”.
For this reason, at this Seminar we will have the opportunity,
alongside Colombia’s biggest tourism business platform, to continue
reflecting on and adopting strategies and solutions regarding climate
change and, in particular, its influence and effects in the Latin
American area.
To this end, the seminar features a panel of experts on this subject as
well as qualified tourism sector professionals with diverse approaches
and different territorial perspectives, who will undoubtedly contribute
to raising the level of the information available on this crucial
aspect in order to continue working towards a better future for all.
