Place: Escola Universitŕria de Turisme i Oci – Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Vila-Seca, Tarragona) Co-ordinator of the Congress: Dr. Marta Nel·lo Andreu. Geography Unit. Research Group into Territorial Analysis and Tourist Studies. Escola Universitŕria de Turisme i Oci de la Universitat Rovira i Virgili (EUTO/URV),
15th and 16th of October
Introduction Considering tourism as a means and an opportunity for development is increasingly found in the socio-economic policies of countries, in the strategies of the receiving countries of international aid and in the objectives or plans of the international co-operation agencies and donating bodies. Some facts that have contributed to this increase in the protagonism of tourism are, among others, the agreement reached in international meetings on the capacity of tourism to contribute towards socio-economic development and, more specifically, to alleviate poverty, as stated in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. The transcendence and magnitude of the journey made so far demands efforts being made on getting to know, analysing, measuring and assessing the effectiveness and real capacity of tourism as a tool for co-operation also from an academic and research point of view. This event is the starting point for the recently constituted International Network of Research into Tourism, Co-operation and Development (COODTUR), the main objectives of which are to create knowledge about co-operation; centralise, share and transfer information and have a bearing on co-operation agencies. This, in fact, is the objective set by COODTUR for this congress.
Main themes: The congress aims to set the bases for a debate about the role of tourism in co-operation, centred around three main themes: a) Tourism as an efficient instrument for co-operation and development. From the theory to the practice. b) Applied projects. Universities’ experiences of co-operation to tourist development. c) Weaknesses and challenges of the co-operation to soustainable tourism development. Reflection on tourist development models.
Presentation of proposals: All the communication and poster proposals will be assessed by the members of the scientific committee. Acceptance of communication or panel proposals will be based on the following aspects: theoretical and empirical value, methodological interest, relevance of the subject to the congress and clarity of the exposition. Works should deal with any of the themes suggested. The scientific committee may consider not accepting a piece of work if it feels that it is not suitable for the theme of the congress. Once the abstracts have been received, depending on the quality, quantity and themes of them, it will be decided whether their presentation will be as a communication or as a poster; they may all be presented in written format and be published in the digital edition of the event. The presentation must include: - the name and institutional origin of the author(s) - address and telephone number - the name of the communication - summary of the communication (maximum of 300 characters in a Word document), one version in Spanish or Catalan and another in English.
Queries and summaries: Proposals for communication and posters should be sent by e-mail to:
