The Conference is made possible primarily through funding from Western Economic Development Canada’s Community Economic Development Initiative. CONFERENCE THEME The conference theme---Building Experiences and Partnerships---gives recognition to the challenge of selecting and building tourist "experiences" (a.k.a. products) that contribute to the livelihood of rural residents and the local economy. Equally important are the environmental and social sustainability of the tourism experiences created in the name of economic development. The conference theme is directly related to work underway by the REDTREE Project http://redtree.tru.ca/ and the ongoing work of the Tourism Research Innovation Project [TRIP] http://www.trip-project.ca/.
CONFERENCE APPROACH and INVITEES The organizers encourage those who operate, manage, support, and study tourism in rural areas to attend the conference. Community organizers and business owners are encouraged to share both their success and challenges building tourism in rural areas. The conference is intended to provide opportunities to share knowledge among important players in rural tourism and to build capacity toward sustainable rural tourism product development and implementation. Sharing this knowledge is intended to improve efforts toward economic diversification via tourism.
