Women and tourism – CALL FOR PAPERS

Invited co-editors: Véronique Antomarchi and Suzanne de la Barre

Anticipated Publication Date: 2011

At a global scale, tourism is a dynamic sector that influences economic, social, cultural and political activities. The purpose of this issue is to critically examine gender relations and differences in touristic practices, experiences and representations. Questions that provide insight into women and travel will be explored from interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspectives (e.g., geography, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, history, economics, philosophy etc.). The aim is to provide an analysis of women’s travel, and examine gender and tourism issues, in a manner that investigates boundaries and differences between genders (or the absence of differences). The issue’s more specific purpose is to provide a description and analysis of the role tourism has on the construction and development of the social, cultural and political identity of women and gender.

Your manuscript can address any of the following issues, or any other related issues:

1) The socio-cultural, economic, and/or political characteristics of female travellers, or feminist and/or other perspectives on touristic practices in relation to gender;

2) Women’s travel markets (“market segments”) and specialized women’s travel tours: For instance, hunting trips for women, women and nature tourism, spas and other retreats, including diet and pre and post natal, products and services created for cosmetic surgery related travel, women only hotels;

3) Tourism and family life: The influence of vacations on family dynamics;

4) Sexuality, femininity and tourism: Representations of desire and destination marketing (shaped, naked, tanned bodies), sex tourism (from male and female perspectives), wedding travel, gay travel, etc.;

5) Female explorers, adventurers and pioneers;

6) Feminization of tourism labour: Inequities, work/family life issues;

7) Theoretical contributions: For instance, feminism and tourism, epistemological or methodological questions and/or proposals.

Authors must send a manuscript, preferably in French, presented according to the journal’s specifications (available at www.teoros.uqam.ca). Submissions should be in Word format (no .pdf) and be between 6,000 and 8,000 words. Each article should include the first and last name of all authors, their main titles and affiliations (one only), their physical postal address and their electronic address (email), an abstract of between150 and 200 words (maximum) in English and in French, as well as a list of key words (maximum of five). Authors are invited to provide three or four high resolution photographs (300 dpi) that are free of copyright issues and that clearly identify the photo and the name of the photographer. Téoros is the only multi-disciplinary, peer-reviewed tourism journal published in French. English authors are invited to submit their work; however, if selected for publication, authors may be asked to translate their text and are responsible for the related cost. Téoros can assist with finding a suitable translator. The publication of articles is conditional to a review process. Articles will be assessed on the basis of the research question, the methodology used, and the transfer of knowledge. All manuscripts will be reviewed anonymously by a peer jury that can make suggestions or ask for changes. The editors will transmit the reviewers’ comments to the authors and ensure that the requested modifications are carried out. Only those articles favorably evaluated, with modifications completed to the satisfaction of the editors, will be published.
