Second Call for papers: 'Leisure spaces, popular culture and geographical imaginations'
Conference: RGS-IBG Annual Meeting, 31.08. - 02.09.2011, London.
Session convenors: Jo-Anne Lester (University of Brighton) and Jacky Tivers (Nottingham Trent University)
Session sponsored by: Geography of Leisure and Tourism Research Group
Session Abstract:
This session will consider spaces of leisure, both as an aspect of popular culture and in relation to geographical imaginations. Leisure spaces, such as parks and gardens, theme parks, retail malls, cinemas, computer and video games, etc., are spaces that construct/produce/reproduce/represent other places and have the propensity to transport people into other worlds. These leisure spaces also draw on and embrace aspects of popular culture in their production and consumption (e.g. films, music, sport, food etc).
Papers are invited which consider leisure spaces in themselves, the role of these in feeding geographical imaginations and constructing other places, and the consumption of these spaces within popular culture. The session may include both theoretically and empirically focused papers. Case study material may be drawn from a wide spectrum of examples, as illustrated in the previous paragraph. In addition to traditionally presented papers, suggestions for non-traditional types of presentation will be welcomed (e.g. based on film, photography, posters, or interactive media).
