CALL for PAPERS Escola Superior de Turismo e Tecnologia do Mar (ESTM/IPL), in Peniche, promotes the
V International Congress Tourism of Leiria and Oeste, on 23-25 November 2011,
with the theme
“The Image and Sustainability of Tourist Destinations”,
aiming to present and discuss national and international experiences
about tourism valuation policies as far as territories, competitiveness,
sustainability and promotion are concerned.
In
the last few decades, the travel and tourism sector has become one of
the main activities of the world-wide economy. According to the
statistics of the World-wide Organization of Tourism, the world-wide
total of arrivals of international tourists reached 806 million in 2005,
an addition to more than 360 million compared to the year of 1990. On
the other hand, the tourist income has grown from 2 billion dollars in
1950 to 680 billion in 2005.
The European Commission itself, through the European Network for SME Research, for
instance, has emphasized the challenge in the increase of the quality
of life in different regions and European cities. Therefore, it will be
useful to recognize the importance that the tourism development can have
in an integrated territorial strategy. For its nature, tourism also has
a systemic impact, since it transversally tends to involve the economy
of a territory developing impacts of social, cultural and environmental
nature.
If
it is true that the tourism is a potential mechanism of generation of
wealth for the resident populations, it is also true that it has an
impact on the territory, since it guides the local economic activity, it
uses resources, requires a considerable amount of suitable structures
and infrastructures, it determines the various requirements of
consumption according to the common needs of the region and the ones
specifically required by the tourism activity.
The
opportunity of a systemic territorial approach appears, as a
consequence of the focus on the territories, in order to encourage the
process of local development. In fact, the territorial models, that have
had their origin in industrial models, are based in a paradigm whose
model is directly related to an endogenous development, and have
recently been adjusted to the tourist activity.
