Geotourism

Australian and New Zealand Association of Leisure Studies

Biennial Conference,

6 – 8th December 2011, Dunedin, New Zealand

 Call for papers on: Geotourism

Convenor: Patricia Erfurt-Cooper (James Cook University, Australia)

Geotourism is a rapidly emerging subdivision of nature-based tourism and is widely recognised as an important sector of the tourism industry worldwide. To date geotourism as such has been explored only by a few researchers in more detail, although the concept of this nature-based tourism is not new. Travel for the purpose of experiencing the natural environment and learning about the geological background of landscapes was already undertaken during the ‘Grand Tour’, when 17th century tourists were encouraged to travel widely to broaden their horizon which included visits to unique landscapes.

There is an ongoing debate about what geotourism includes; only geological aspects or anything ‘geo’?

Suggested topics for the session covering Geotourism:

·        The geodiversity of geotourism – what is included?

·        Geotourism – experiencing and learning about natural geosites

·        Geotourism destinations and their special geo-attractions

·        The role of protected sites in geotourism

·        Risk management in geotourism

·        What do visitors expect from a geoscape or a geosite?

·        E-marketing – virtual geological heritage trips for sale

·        Future trends and recommendations for the geotourism sector

This session aims to build on the research published by several authors about geotourism (including Hose, 2005; Newsome & Dowling, 2005; Erfurt-Cooper & Cooper, 2010; Dowling & Newsome, 2010; Newsome & Dowling, 2010). To contribute updated research to the geotourism literature abstracts for presentations are sought from researchers examining all aspects of geotourism.

Abstracts limited to 250 words should be sent to Patricia Erfurt-Cooper
