1. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TOURISM MANAGEMENT AND TOURISM RELATED ISSUES
RIMINI, ITALY, SEPTEMBER 15-16, 2011
CHAIRPERSONS
Marcello M. Mariani, University of Bologna, Italy
Dimitrios Buhalis, Bournemouth University, Dorset, UK
BACKGROUND
Tourism is playing an increasing role in today’s business world.
According to recent analyses conducted by the World Travel and Tourism
Council (WTTC) the tourism industry employs approximately 235 million
people (8% of the world labour force) and generates over 9% of world
GDP.
Tourism 2020 Vision, the United Nations World Tourism Organization's
long-term forecast and assessment of the development of tourism up to
the first 20 years of the new millennium, estimates that international
arrivals are expected to reach nearly 1.6 billion by the year 2020: of
these worldwide arrivals in 2020, 1.2 billion will be intraregional and
378 million will be long-haul travellers.
This dramatic increase in demand for tourism is due to a number of major
factors: (1) the development of mass transportation and motorization
(and the parallel decrease in cost of transportation due to improvements
in technology); (2) the introduction of new ICT applications in the
work of public and private stakeholders in the tourism sector; (3) the
rhythm of increase of world GDP as well as the increase of income to be
allocated to travels; (4) the general improvement of security and rights
for tourists; (5) the process of globalization.
The abovementioned factors are significantly contributing to shaping a
different institutional landscape and economic environment for a number
of economic players such as Convention Bureaus, Professional Conference
Organizers (PCOs), Destination Management Companies (DMCs), Airlines,
Hotels, Conference Venues, Congress Centers, Convention Centers,
Exhibition Centers.
Moreover, companies in the tourism sector are confronted with increasing
managerial challenges and have to deal with a turbulent and fast
changing environment.
RESEARCH IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT AND TOURISM RELATED ISSUES
Given the general picture portrayed above, research should be undertaken in order to gain a thorough, articulated and clear cut picture of the major changes going on in the tourism sector, with a specific emphasis on major changes such as (1) mergers and acquisitions and strategic alliances; (2) structural shifts in the style of consumption and fruition through a replacement of a Fordist model of production/consumption with a post-Fordist one; (3) the impact of several major economic and climatic events (such as the recent financial and economic downturn, the terrorist attacks and the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano) on the travelling and hospitality industry. All of these issues (and more) require significant reflection and this conference will be an irreplaceable opportunity to tackle them in depth. Moreover, the doctoral workshop will provide an opportunity for doctoral students to interact with relevant scholars and get advise on their own research.
TOPICS - CALL FOR PAPERS
The conference will focus on a number of topics related to tourism, travel, leisure and hospitality management. We invite full papers, doctoral research papers, poster papers, abstracts, and research proposals on any of the following themes:
- Destination management - Hospitality management - Congress management - Air transportation management - Archeological sites management - World Heritage and intangible cultural heritage management - Urban and regional tourism planning - Tourism policies - Inter-organizational dynamics (e.g., mergers and acquisitions, joint venture, strategic alliances, coopetitive strategies, etc.) in the tourism sector - Tourism marketing - Renewable sources of energy and tourism - Glocalisation: managing the global and the local in the tourism industry - Ecotourism and sustainable tourism development - ICT and tourism - Managing the skies: air transportation after the Eyjafjallajokull volcano eruption
The topics reported above are indicative and informative rather than exclusive. Other interesting work on tourism management and tourism related issues that is not closely related to the themes above will be taken into consideration.
To advance investigation on tourism management and to further expand its theoretical and practical bases and boundaries, we need to explore, apply and confront both conceptual and empirical wisdom and scholarship stemming from different perspectives. Therefore, both business practitioners and academics are invited to submit their contributions.
Those who are interested in presenting a paper should submit a one page abstract by March 23, 2011.
To be acceptable, proposals MUST only be submitted through this official website: http://www.eiasm.org/frontoffice/eventLogin.asp?item=UPL&event_id=789
