10th International Circle Conference

3rd - 6th April 2013, Viana do Castelo, Portugal

The 10th (annual) International CIRCLE Conference for Consumer Behaviour and Retailing Research is hosted by the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, Portugal, a relatively new higher education institution that has developed rapidly over the last twenty years to become a major provider of higher education in peripheral northern Portugal.

The Centre engages in interdisciplinary research and consultancy projects in order to explore and examine consumer behaviour in local, regional, national or international contexts for a range of service industries including culture, events, finance, hospitality, leisure, marketing, retailing and tourism. All research activities/projects/conference proceedings are disseminated with the dual purpose of assisting managers and practitioners who work in the industry to gain a wider perspective of issues, strategies, and ideas advancing business worldwide as well as fuelling further academic study and debate in this important emerging research area.

The objective of the 10th International Conference for Consumer Behaviour, Tourism and Retailing Research Conference is twofold. First is to provide an international environment for different academic/professional approaches and discussions on the comparative advantage or “added value” theory/practice in an increasingly globalised contemporary society, and to which extent they are effective.

Secondly, to provide the opportunity for young scholars, practitioners and Master/PhD students to connect on a local-to-global context and have their work validated and benchmarked within the benevolent academic and professional community of colleagues from different international contexts. The young scholars, studying for their Master or PhD are invited also to their symposium and to meet with their supervisory team.

All accepted papers will be published in Access Press Journals.

    As the focus of the Conference is intended to foster interdisciplinary work, we seek research from various academic disciplines and approaches of contemporary political, economic, social and technological environment for international business practice(s) and their target market(s) with special emphasis on culture, management, retailing, hospitality, tourism and events. Empirical and theoretical papers are equally welcome. The subject range is broad. We invite papers, including but not limited to the following topics:

    All abstracts and final papers should be submitted in English, checked for correct grammar and spelling and e-mailed to  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it  in Microsoft Word  format.

    Abstracts should clearly state the purpose, results and conclusions of the work to be described in the final paper. Key words (3-5) should be enclosed to abstract. Please, provide full names, affiliations and up-to-date contact details (postal address, university/business address, e-mail, and telephone and fax numbers).

    Abstracts and final papers should be in Arial font, size 12. All images need to be provided as 300dpi.

    Both abstracts and final papers will be double blind reviewed. Authors will receive abstract acceptance notice by 15th January 2013 – at the latest. Full papers should be submitted by 15th February 2013. Author registration is due to 1st of March 2013.

    All accepted papers will be published in Access Press Journals (details to be given at the conference.)

    Presentation Instructions

    English is the official language of the 10th International Circle Conference.
    Presentation should last approximately 15-20 minutes. After the last presentation of each workshop, the remaining time will be used for questions/discussion.     Keynote speaker on Wednesday, 3rd of April

    Praveen Gupta is a Director of Center for Innovation Science and Applications at IIT School of Applied Technology. He has also taught Innovations for Engineers course at University of Illinois, Chicago. His innovation curriculum is taught at multiple institutions in the U.S. and Mexico. Praveen is President of Accelper Consulting for providing assistance in sustaining profitable growth to corporations. Praveen has authored many books including Business Innovation in the 21st Century, The Innovation Solution, Six Sigma Business Scorecard, Service Scorecard, Stat Free Six Sigma, and the Six Sigma Performance Handbook. He is the founding Editor of the International Journal of Innovation Science, Chair of Business Innovation Conference, and lead developer of the Business Innovation certification program offered in collaboration with Illinois Institute of Technology.


    Keynote speaker on Wednesday, 3rd of April

    Greg Richards is Professor of Leisure Studies at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. He has recently been a member of the Palmer/Rae team evaluating the impact of the European Cities of Culture for the European Commission, a contributor to the European Travel Commission study of City Tourism and Culture and an adviser on the development of national cultural tourism policy in Austria. He is also directing the ongoing ATLAS Cultural Tourism Research, gathering data on cultural tourism consumption in 20 countries. Recent projects include an assessment of a major event to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of the painter Hieronymus Bosch, the evaluations of the European Capitals of Culture in Luxemburg (2007) and Sibiu (2007) as well as advising on the final report for the Cultural Capital in Stavanger (2008).


    Keynote speaker on Thursday, 4th of April

    Alan Clarke is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Pannonia, in Hungary. He arrived in Hungary in 2005 after a career in UK Higher Education – working at the Open University programmes by distance learning. He has undertaken research and consultancy projects for the public and private sectors in leisure and tourism in Europe, the Caribbean, India and Asia, and has contributed to three major European projects. Alan has successfully supervised 25 PhD students and 4 MPhil students. He has published over 50 articles and his most recent book on International Hospitality Management (with Wei Chen) is still proving popular. Alan’s current research interests focus on governance, policy and development issues, especially in the areas of culture and sports..
