35th  Annual SERR Conference

Southeastern Recreation Research Conference

February 24th – February 26th 2013

Athens, Georgia

Program available in January 2013

The SERR conference

The Southeastern Recreation Research (SERR) Conference provides an exceptional opportunity for researchers and managers within the parks, recreation and amenity management system fields to learn about and discuss each other’s projects, research findings, and regional needs. The conference focus is on outdoor-based leisure, recreation and tourism research; however, other topics are welcome if they have a direct link to this focus. The conference setting supports both formal presentations and informal discussions in a relaxed setting.

Conference venue and lodging

Athens, Georgia is a lively college town known for its unique music scene, great restaurants and shops, and—of course—the University of Georgia. Chartered in 1785, the University of Georgia serves as the main attraction for many visitors to the small town of Athens. However, after a short time spent in “The Classic City,” visitors soon realize that Athens has so much to offer. As the city where bands such as The Indigo Girls, The B-52s, R.E.M., and Widespread Panic got their start, Athens attracts music lovers from all over to its shows at venues such as the famous Georgia Theater and the 40 Watt.

Downtown Athens also offers shopping for those interested in checking out local art, jewelry, clothing and more. Even if you are just looking for a nice walk around the Downtown area, Athens has plenty to look at and some nice coffee shops to stop at, including our very own Jittery Joe’s Coffee. There is something for everyone in The Classic City. After visiting Athens for the first time, you will find yourself wanting to come back again and again.

In the heart of Downtown Athens is the Hilton Garden Inn. The hotel provides parking for its guests at a small cost per night (i.e., $8), a variety of quality rooms and suites (i.e., $124), and amenities include a gym and a restaurant in the hotel. TEL: 1-706-353-6800

The Hilton Garden Inn is within walking distance of more than 30+ local restaurants, including Transmetropolitan, Clocked, Farm 255, and Ted’s Most Best.

We invite your participation in the 35th Annual Southeastern Recreation Research (SERR) Conference scheduled for February 24th – February 26th, 2013 in Athens, Georgia.  Graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, agency planners, land managers, and researchers are all encouraged to attend the conference and submit a proposal for an oral or poster presentation.  Oral presentations will be given in a conference room setting.  Audiovisual support will be available in the form of a laptop (with a CD-ROM drive and a USB port) and a projection unit.  Each oral presenter will be given 20 minutes for presenting their paper and 5 minutes for discussion. Authors presenting planned or uncompleted research may be asked to make their presentations in the form of a poster.

Presentation Proposals: Abstracts (consisting of a cover sheet and a 500 word abstract) for oral and poster presentations at the 2013 SERR Conference are now being sought.  Presentations should be of an empirical, conceptual, or theoretical nature related to the following topics:

● Outdoor Recreation & Education

Your abstract should be sufficiently detailed to permit judgment of the paper’s quality.  Abstracts of empirical papers should include a problem statement, methods (including analysis), results, and address policy, planning, or management implications.  Abstracts of conceptual and theoretical papers should include a problem statement and discussion with a system of organization similar to that of the empirical papers. A list of references is not required but may be added as an appendix at the author’s discretion.  Your abstract should be double-spaced in 12-point font with margins all one inch.  You must include a title but NOT your name in File 2.  The title should be capitalized and centered (long titles broken into two lines). Any tables and figures should be clear and easy to read.  Place tables and figures at the end of the abstract with reference made in the body of the abstract. Text on tables, figures, and/or references is NOT included in the 500 word count for the abstract.

Selection of abstracts for presentation will be based upon review by two or more peers of the SERR community.  Authors with accepted abstracts are expected to present their papers at the conference.  In the case of multiple authorship on papers, at least one author must be present.  Abstracts submitted are expected to meet professional standards.

Deadline: All proposals must be submitted by Friday, December 14th, 2012.  Authors will receive notification of acceptance or rejection along with reviewers’ comments within four weeks of the date of their proposal submission.  A list of presenters with session titles will be available on this website by the third week of January.
