Call for Papers: Special Issue of Tourism Recreation Research on “The Journey to 2050: A World Tourism Perspective’’.

Guest Editors:
Ian Yeoman, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand & European Tourism Futures Institute, Netherlands.
Albert Postma, European Tourism Futures Institute, Netherlands

Economists and meteorologists may find it relatively straightforward to understand and predict with accuracy the outlook for the economy or the weather for the coming week as these events are closely bound to the present and have a greater degree of certainty.   What about a more long term perspective?  In a world where 25 million tourists took an international holiday in 1950 and 100 years later it is forecasted to grow to 4.7 billion (Yeoman 2012). Can humankind meet that forecast given the issues of ageing populations, peak oil, the global financial crisis and climate change?  Who will be the future tourist? Has the world the right policy options and it is prepared for change?

In order to understand how those issues could occur, a special issue of Tourism Recreation Research calls for abstracts framed on Bergman’set al (2010) ontology of futures research i.e., prediction, science fiction, prognosis and utopia / dystopia. The ontological framework will be used to understand the state of tourism futures research and guide author’s arguments.

Case studies, empirical findings and conceptual papers expanding on how the long term structural changes in the world will impact and develop tourism are most welcome. Papers that address short term issues are not encouraged unless in context i.e., the development of a conceptual framework for policy makers examining the impact of demography and tourism.
