7th Critical Tourism Studies Conference

Dear colleagues and friends,

We are happy to announce the 7th Critical Tourism Studies Conference, that will take place 25-29 of June, 2017 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

Palmaone of the oldest and most popular tourism destinations of the Mediterranean, is an iconic example of the best and worst of the power of tourism developmentA walk in this citywhich is full of history and was established by the Roman empire already in 123 BC, will immerse you in the appreciation of cultural traditions, magic scenery and the beauty of local heritage, but also bring you back to periods of massive uncontrolled tourism expansion and provide you with a first row seat to experience mass destination during high season.

Palma will give us
a perfect setting for the main theme of this conference:

UNDERSTAND TOURISM – CHANGE TOURISM

UNDERSTAND OURSELVES – CHANGE OURSELVES

W
elcome to a critical and hopeful dialogue about contexts, moralities, knowledges, the world and the self!

A more detailed call for presentations and further information will follow in August, 2016.

For those of you that are not acquainted with the Critical Tourism Studies (CTS) community, CTS is an international network of scholars who share a vision of producing and promoting social change in and through tourism practice, research and education. The Critical Tourism Studies conference series was launched in 2005 by Irena Ateljevic (Institute for Tourism Zagreb), Candice Harris (Auckland University of Technology), Nigel Morgan (University of Surrey) and Annette Pritchard (Cardiff Metropolitan University).

T
he last two editions of this conference series were made possible thanks to the creative engagement and effort of Lynn Minnaert (New York University) and Senija Causevic (University of London). Over the past eleven years, CTS has profiled itself as a network of scholars who share a vision of producing and promoting social change in and through tourism practice, research and education. It has done this so far by seeking to legitimise the critical school of thought in tourism studies and by providing an inclusive environment for new and alternative voices in the academy. Adopting a broad definition of ‘criticality’, CTS seeks to find novel ways of understanding and changing tourism by locating the phenomenon in its wider political, economic, cultural and social contexts.

We look forward to welcoming new and old CTSers in Palma for four days of inspiration, critical dialogueshope and positive energy - Mark your calendars and join us for CTS17!

Abrazos,
