British Columbia, Canada:
SPIRIT OF 2010 TOURISM STRATEGY On May 3, 2004, the British Columbia government released the Spirit of 2010 Tourism Strategy. The strategy provides a framework for government and the tourism industry to collaborate on tourism growth throughout the province and to maximize the opportunities created by the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The objectives of the strategy are to: > Increase the numbers of visitors, particularly visitors with high spending ability; > Increase private sector tourism investment; > Increase use of existing tourism resources; and > Leverage Olympic opportunities.
2010 OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC WINTER GAMES The Province has committed more than $600 million to make the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games a success. Doubling Tourism BC’s marketing budget provides funding to implement a 2010 Winter Games marketing strategy leading up to 2010. In addition, the $20-million Olympic/Paralympic Live Sites program is accessible to communities that wish to construct or upgrade facilities that leave a lasting Olympic legacy. The 2010 Commerce Centre allows businesses access to an estimated $4 billion in economic and procurement opportunities generated by the 2010 Winter Games. 2010 LegaciesNow’s ArtsNow program will provide $12 million to community organizations to showcase B.C.’s cultural diversity. The Hosting BC program is investing $225,000 in 12 communities to assist them in hosting 17 major sporting events in 2005.
