In a Decima Research poll conducted last year, 80 % of consumers stated it is unacceptable to confine animals in cages for food production. Well, foodies attending the BC Food Service Expo in Vancouver will be greeted by a giant chicken provided by the Vancouver Humane Society.

VHS is challenging Loblaw Canada, an exhibitor at food service expo, to post in-store signage to identify eggs collected from caged hens to make it easier for consumers to make an informed choice.

Today VHS releases a controversial national video revealing the cruelty of battery hen egg production and the ethical dilemma facing people who want to buy eggs produced by hens kept in more humane conditions. This video, which will be widely distributed nationally, is part of a national project by the Vancouver Humane Society, Canadians for the Ethical Treatment of Food Animals and Humane Society International Canada. Its purpose is to inform the public about the cruelty of battery cages in egg production.

batteryhens.JPGThe reality of a battery “egg farm” is quite different from most people’s expectation of a farm. Multiple hens live crowded into cages arranged in tiers with the feces falling through on the caged hens below each tier. In battery cages, there is no space for hens to flap or stretch their wings. When they try, their wings sometimes become trapped in the bars of the cage.

Vertical space is limited and hens are often unable to stand up fully and raise their heads without hitting the bars of the cage. Their claws and feet are frequently caught in the wire cage mesh. At some “egg farms” their upper beaks are sliced off with a laser or hot blade to prevent pecking at other birds.

freerangehens1.jpgThere are several alternatives to the current standard production methods used in Canada. These include certified organic, free-range and free-run eggs. There are also many easy egg-substitutes for people who choose not to use eggs at all.

The video is available on dvd or at this website. Video footage of Canadian egg farm available on BETACAM SP or at the same website.
