Responsible Travel Handbook 2006

A compilation of resources and articles for responsible travellers
The Educational Travel Community / The Educational Travel Community , 2006

This handbook is a compilation of articles and resources aimed at helping travellers to understand, research and ultimately organise responsible travel. The articles and resources are very different in their choice of topic as well as approaches.

Resources include:

  • "Definitions: dream of a common language" intends help the reader distinguish from the vast collection of terms related to responsible tourism, and offers a number of categorisations and definitions that can be used as a starting point to understand responsible tourism
  • "VolunTourism" explains the concept of VolunTourism, which involves travelling to another place to directly interact with the destination and its residents with the objective of improving their well-being through socio-cultural development or environmental conservation
  • "Tourism and Poverty: Reflections on the World Bank" takes a critical look on the World Bank’s commitment to sustainable tourism
  • "The impacts of study abroad: educational travel as a model for responsible tourism" argues that study abroad can be a form of responsible travel when there is an equal exchange between students and hosts and when an effort is made on the part of programme organisers and students to understand the deeper issues in the cross-cultural experience
  • "Ecotourism Guidelines: how to choose the organisations and businesses you support" gives very practical information on planning a responsible holiday
  • "Tourism Certification and indigenous peoples in Latin America" looks at the marginalisation of indigenous peoples in tourism certification schemes.
